PDP Faults Tinubu’s Policies, Says 150M Nigerians Sleep Hungry

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s opposition party, has expressed that due to ineffective policies implemented by the Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, more than 150 million Nigerians are grappling with hunger.

In a statement by their national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP highlighted that President Tinubu’s economic strategies have led to a disconnect between the government and the citizens. Ologunagba raised concerns about the government’s commitment to the well-being of Nigerians, especially in light of the removal of gasoline subsidies and the devaluation of the naira.

These policies have resulted in soaring living expenses, the collapse of numerous businesses, widespread job losses, and subsequently, a surge in poverty, hunger, insecurity, and a prevailing sense of despair in the nation. Ologunagba also pointed out that, in the past two months, more than 150 million Nigerians are now unable to afford daily meals, leaving families to go to bed without food.

The statement reads “The situation has snowballed into a dangerous loss of investors’ confidence with international companies exiting our nation and leaving millions of Nigerians stranded in the labour market.

“This has a crippling effect on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) which are the real drivers of our national economy.”

Ologunagba criticized the government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal, particularly the distribution of approximately 1,200 bags of rice to each state across the nation, deeming it insufficient.
