On Tuesday, the Edo State Police Command held a press conference where they presented Victor Ochonogor, a 400 Level student at the University of Port Harcourt, as a suspect in the tragic killing of his girlfriend at his residence in Benin City. The incident unfolded at 10, Osahon Street, Ogheghe Quarters, just off Sapele Road in Benin City.
Ochonogor and his girlfriend were reportedly inside the house when the violent altercation occurred, prompting the landlord to alert the police. Commissioner of Police Dankwara Mohammed disclosed that the incident was reported to the police around 4 pm on Monday, August 21, 2023, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
The 25-year-old suspect, Ochonogor, admitted to having been in a relationship with his late girlfriend for three years. He mentioned that she had come from Asaba to visit him, and during their time together, she accused him of involvement in kidnapping activities.
He said “I have been dating her for three years now and she accused me of being a kidnapper. I asked her why she must be accusing me of such things when we have been together for such a time?
“I am not a kidnapper and some of the members of her family know me very well.
“They accused me of being a kidnapper, how can a kidnapper be dating somebody?” He asked rhetorically.
Ochonogor stated that he refrained from causing harm to his girlfriend due to his feelings of jealousy over her intention to marry someone else. The Commissioner of Police, Dankwara Mohammed, announced that the case will be presented in court for legal action.
