On Wednesday, army officers in Gabon made a televised announcement, as reported by the BBC, declaring their assumption of power in the West African nation. They further stated their intention to invalidate the election results from Saturday, where President Ali Bongo had been declared the victor.
These officers identified themselves as part of the CTRI (Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions).
“We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the regime in power.”
According to the electoral commission, Albert Ondo Ossa, the primary competitor against Bongo, secured second place with 30.77% of the vote. Bongo’s camp has dismissed Ondo Ossa’s claims of electoral irregularities. If his removal succeeds, it would mark the conclusion of his family’s 53-year reign in Gabon.
