Delta South: Joel-Onowakpo Vows To Appeal Tribunal Judgement Ordering Re-run

Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas representing Delta South senatorial district, along with his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), have expressed their intention to file an appeal against the decision made by the National and State Houses of Assembly Election Tribunal in Asaba, the state capital.

This comes after the senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Michael Diden (aka Ejele), contested Joel-Onowakpo’s victory in the 2023 National Assembly elections.

Diden and the PDP, in their petition marked EPT/DT/SEN/01/2023, requested the tribunal to invalidate the Independent National Electoral Commission’s declaration of Joel-Onowakpo as the winner, citing allegations that he did not secure the majority of legitimate votes in the election.

In a recent ruling by the three-member panel led by Justice Cathrine Ogunsola, the tribunal declared the election that led to Joel-Onowakpo’s victory as inconclusive and directed INEC to organize a supplementary election within 90 days in the Warri South council area of Delta South senatorial district.

In response, Joel-Onowakpo stated that he and the APC plan to challenge the tribunal’s decision through the appeals process.

“As I consult the leadership of our party and my legal team, rest assured that we will appeal this judgement and we will do everything within our God-given grace to defend our mandate.

“However, I wish to urge my teaming supporters and APC faithful in Delta South Senatorial District to remain calm and show brotherly love to one another.”

“Rest assured that, by God’s grace, the mandate you gave to me at the polls will be defended and I will remain your Senator now and for the next four years,” Joel-Onowakpo added.
