Morocco Mourns Quake Victims As Death Toll Passes 2,000

On Sunday, the people of Morocco expressed their grief for the victims of a catastrophic earthquake that claimed the lives of over 2,000 individuals. Meanwhile, rescue teams worked tirelessly to locate survivors trapped amidst the debris of villages reduced to rubble.

The earthquake, the most powerful ever recorded in the nation, has resulted in a minimum of 2,012 fatalities and over 2,059 injuries, with a significant number in critical condition, according to the latest official statistics.

This 6.8-magnitude earthquake, which occurred on Friday, struck approximately 72 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of the popular tourist destination of Marrakesh, causing widespread devastation in rural communities.

“I’ve lost everything”, said Lahcen, a resident of the mountain village of Moulay Brahim, whose wife and four children were killed.

Rescue personnel successfully retrieved the remains of Lahcen’s three daughters from the wreckage of their former residence, though they have not yet located the bodies of his wife and son.

“I can’t do anything about it now, I just want to get away from the world and mourn.”

Military forces and emergency response teams have mobilized urgently to access isolated mountain communities where there are concerns that individuals may still be trapped.
