FG Moves NIMC To Ministry Of Interior

On Wednesday, the federal government made the decision to move the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) from the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to the Ministry of Interior.

This move aims to tackle the persistent challenges related to National Identity Numbers (NIN), a crucial requirement for obtaining International Passports and other travel documents.

Previously, NIMC, in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), worked on linking NIN with Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM) to combat issues like kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism, with over 100 million Nigerians completing this linkage in three years.

This relocation process is being expedited to align with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to eliminate obstacles in acquiring NIN and Passports. A source familiar with NIMC’s operations noted that the Ministry of Interior has traditionally overseen NIMC and expressed regret that bureaucratic contract awards had hindered technological solutions for the NIN challenges.

Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, confirmed the relocation when contacted.

He said: “Yes, we have been moved.”
