The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has affirmed its commitment to achieving a five percent reduction in road traffic fatalities and injuries nationwide under the current administration.
This assurance was delivered by Mr. Dauda Biu, the Corps Marshal of FRSC, during the 2023 Special Marshals Sectoral workshop held in Abuja on Saturday.
Mr. Biu, represented by Deputy Corps Marshal (DCM) Mr. Shehu Zaki, expressed confidence in attaining the targeted five percent reduction in road traffic fatalities. He emphasized the importance of enhancing the capacity for data collection, analysis, and management to improve the formulation of road safety policies.
Additionally, he stressed the need for regular assessment of the Corps’ activities and their impact on reducing accidents on Nigerian roads. Mr. Biu also underlined that road traffic crashes result from human actions or inactions, rather than being mere accidents.
“It is therefore preventable. Road Safety advocacy is not for the FRSC alone rather, it is a shared responsibility involving us all.
“If we resolve today to play our roles in this task, Nigeria will be saving her precious human capital; and the time for action is now,” he said.
Biu explained that as part of their efforts to fulfill their official duties, the Corps introduced a volunteer branch called Special Marshals. These individuals, he clarified, are individuals of recognized integrity with verifiable and lawful sources of income in society, who are motivated to serve humanity without any monetary compensation.
He emphasized that volunteerism embodies a selfless, patriotic, and contributory mindset, devoid of any financial motivation. The Corps Marshal further stressed that Special Marshals should not be seen as individuals volunteering solely for financial gain.
“People should remember that the attributes of a volunteer are delivery of services that must benefit others, and all services should be done without expectation of a reward.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Therefore, I congratulate you all on the work you do to reduce crashes on our roads.
” Together, we will ensure that the FRSC 2023 Corporate Strategic Goal in enhancing road safety partnership for innovative intervention
and accomplishing five per cent reduction in road traffic crashes and injuries is achieved,” Biu said.
Dr. Yusuf Suberu, Squadron Leader at the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in the FCT, urged the public using the roads to refrain from excessive speeding in order to safeguard both lives and property.
Dr. Suberu, who also holds the position of National Coordinator for Road Traffic and Vehicle Inspection Mayors, highlighted the ongoing collaboration and support between the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and the FRSC. He assured that the VIO would maintain its cooperative efforts with relevant sister agencies to consistently enhance road safety for everyone.
