The Republic of Cuba and the Federal Government have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on food security and advancements in agriculture.
Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security representing the Nigerian Government, signed this MoU during the G77+China Leaders’ Summit in Havana, at the Ministry of Agriculture in Cuba. Kyari described this as a historic step towards strengthening the agricultural collaboration between Nigeria and Cuba.
He praised the Cuban government’s willingness to cooperate with Nigeria, emphasizing the shared vision both nations have for their people.
The minister also expressed gratitude for the valuable insights provided by Cuba on Nigeria’s agricultural opportunities and challenges.
Furthermore, he highlighted Nigeria’s demographic advantage, abundant land resources, significant agricultural potential, and President Bola Tinubu’s vision for ensuring food and nutrition security.
” It is in this spirit that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development evolved into the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security,” he said.
Kyari also offered a cooperative hand to his counterparts in Cuba, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in key areas like enhancing the nutritional value of agricultural crops and enhancing the quality of agricultural seeds and seedlings.
He added: ” Others were agricultural mechanisation, cutting-edge technologies for increased yields, and the reduction of post-harvest losses.
” Nigeria is keenly interested in collaborating with Cuba in the domains of poultry, livestock, and fisheries.
” Key areas of cooperation include veterinary medicine, vaccine development, artificial insemination, development of pastures and ranching as essential components in curbing the challenges posed by inefficient open grazing of cattle.”
The minister identified additional areas, including training, capacity development, and the sharing of knowledge, as fundamental pillars for a prosperous agricultural economy.
