Nigeria’s Grid Collapses Again, Electricity Supply Drops To 42.7MW

Once again, on Tuesday, Nigeria experienced a national grid failure as power generation plummeted from 3,594.60 megawatts at midnight to a critically low 42.7MW at midday.

At noon, only the Delta Power plant was operational, providing 41MW, with Afam contributing a mere 1.7MW. This grid collapse severely impacted Lagos, losing power at 11:32 am, and is attributed to a nationwide system failure.

This incident marks the third grid collapse in less than a month, following two occurrences just five days prior that plunged the nation into prolonged darkness. These recurring grid failures have dire consequences, resulting in nationwide blackouts and depriving many Nigerians of electricity. The Transmission Company of Nigeria has not issued a statement explaining the cause of this latest collapse, but it is suspected to be related to infrastructure limitations, gas supply challenges, and transmission system constraints.

These grid failures represent a significant setback to the country’s economic and developmental progress, resulting in substantial annual financial losses due to power interruptions. Furthermore, these outages negatively impact the daily lives of Nigerians, impeding their ability to work, study, and conduct business activities.
