Lionel Messi was absent from Inter Miami’s recent training session leading up to their U.S. Open Cup final against the Houston Dynamo this Wednesday. His return to the field remains uncertain. The final presents an opportunity for Miami to secure their second trophy since Messi’s arrival, following their Leagues Cup victory last month.
Messi was unavailable for Miami’s 1-1 draw against Orlando City on Sunday, with coach Gerardo Martino describing his status as “day to day.” It remains unclear whether Messi is dealing with exhaustion from a busy schedule since joining the club in July or if there is an underlying injury concern.
Martino has mentioned previous “scars” affecting Messi but has not specified any particular injuries. More information regarding Messi’s participation in the game may be provided when Martino addresses the media later on Tuesday.
During Inter’s training session, which was open to the media for the initial 15 minutes, neither Messi nor his former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba took part. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has been struggling since his substitution in the 88th minute of Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Ecuador on September 7. After sitting out the second qualifier in Bolivia, he returned to his club after the international break.
Messi then missed Miami’s 5-2 loss to Atlanta on September 16 due to muscle fatigue, and he started the home game against Toronto but had to be substituted in the 38th minute, shortly after Alba was also withdrawn.
