Fear has once again gripped the Eku community in Delta state’s Ethiope East local government area. This fear stems from an incident where unidentified gunmen opened fire on a young couple on Sunday.
According to local residents, the wounded individuals were swiftly taken to Eku Hospital by concerned citizens after the gunmen vanished without a trace.
It was also reported that on the same Sunday, another young person from the community was allegedly pursued to the neighboring Okpara community and fatally shot. As of now, residents say these disturbing events have heightened tension within the community.
It is worth noting that just last month, a curfew was imposed in the area following the shooting death of a young man who had recently been married. This incident, which occurred around the Hospital quarter area of the town, led to speculations of a reprisal attack by a rival cult group. When contacted for comment via WhatsApp, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, stated that he had not yet received information about these recent developments.
“Not aware yet sir,” he replied briefly.
A video depicting the young boy and his girlfriend undergoing treatment at Eku Hospital was shared on the Eku Progress Union’s Facebook group. In the background, a voice expressed concerns about the prevailing insecurity within the town.
In the video, the boy’s father, who was identified, sat nearby while medical personnel attended to his son.
