The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that five individuals perished in a petrol tanker blast within the state. DSP Bright Edafe, the command’s spokesperson, disclosed this on Sunday.
Earlier, Waffi TV had reported that numerous fatalities and car fires occurred as a fuel-laden tanker exploded in Delta on Sunday. Edafe explained that the incident transpired in the morning in Ugbenu, located in the Ethiope West Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, as the petrol-loaded tanker was en route to Benin City.
“In the early hours of Oct. 1, 2023, at about 0200hrs, the Command recorded a tragic incident where a tanker, laden with petroleum product, being driven towards Benin on the Warri-Benin Road fell at Ugbenu Koko Junction.
“Its content spilled into the nearby swamp and the spillage attracted a couple of youths who took advantage of the incident and started scooping fuel into jerry cans and other containers.
“While they were at it, an explosion erupted and the fire from the explosion engulfed the whole area.
“The fire claimed the lives of five persons among the youths who had come to scoop fuel,” Edafe said.
He stated that a number of assets, such as eight buses of various models, two tankers, five trailers, two motorcycles, a Sienna space wagon, and a ‘C’ Class Mercedes Benz car, were also consumed by the flames.
Edafe further mentioned that the deceased individuals had been taken to the morgue at Oghara General Hospital in Ethiope West.
He explained that law enforcement officers from the Oghara division, in cooperation with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ethiope West, swiftly responded to the incident site to guarantee unimpeded traffic flow.
