A tragic incident occurred on Monday when a boat, carrying approximately 22 passengers, capsized during its journey from Kasabu village in the Agwara local government area of Niger to Yauri in Kebbi.
Alhaji Salihu Garba, the Acting Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), shared this information with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna.
The mishap took place between 11 am and 12 pm on that fateful day, as reported to the agency. A survivor of the accident confirmed that there were around 22 passengers on board at the time. Currently, local divers and boat owners are conducting search and rescue operations under the supervision of the agency’s desk officer in Agwara. Unfortunately, no passengers have been found yet, and this incident coincided with Yauri market day, delaying the identification of missing individuals until after the market’s conclusion.
Garba explained that it typically takes approximately 24 hours for a submerged person to resurface. He attributed the cause of the incident to the presence of water hyacinth and the force of strong waves.
