Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday when Lens mounted a comeback to secure a thrilling 2-1 victory in a Champions League match in France.
Gabriel Jesus got Arsenal off to a strong start by scoring in the 14th minute, but Adrien Thomasson quickly equalized for Lens. Unfortunately, Bukayo Saka had to leave the game due to an injury before halftime.
Elye Wahi, Lens’ 20-year-old striker and club-record signing, delivered a fantastic second-half strike in the 69th minute to secure the win for Lens. This result propelled Lens to the top of Champions League Group B with four points, surpassing Arsenal by one point.
In another match in the group on the same day, PSV Eindhoven and Sevilla played to a 2-2 draw in the Netherlands.
After a 20-year absence from the elite club competition, Lens made their European home game against Arsenal, a team they famously defeated in the Champions League in 1998, even more special. Arsenal had entered the match undefeated this season, reaffirming their status as group favorites with a 4-0 victory over PSV in their first game, while Lens drew 1-1 against Sevilla.
