Inter Milan supporters plan to welcome Romelu Lukaku, their former hero, by distributing 50,000 whistles to fans during their upcoming home match against Roma.
The Curva Nord ultras group announced their intention to express their sense of betrayal towards the Belgian striker, who is currently on loan at Roma from Chelsea.
This decision comes after Lukaku’s departure from Inter, which was reportedly triggered by his attempt to transfer to arch-rivals Juventus, despite previously declaring his love for Inter.
“October 29 is the day to mark in red, to make heard our disgust at someone who turned his back on us in the most shameful manner possible,” said the fans in their statement.
“Before the Roma match the ‘Nord’ will hand out 50,000 whistles to be used until the last breath every time someone who betrayed our shirt touches the ball.”
Once an adored figure among Inter Milan fans, Lukaku helped secure the Serie A title in 2021, but he departed for Chelsea that summer. Upon returning to the San Siro on loan the following year, he grappled with injuries and faced competition from Edin Dzeko, limiting his playing time. When the potential permanent transfer back to Inter fell through this summer, Lukaku and Chelsea eventually agreed to a loan arrangement with Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
Inter, however, hasn’t felt the absence of Lukaku significantly, with Lautaro Martinez and the newly acquired Marcus Thuram forming an exciting and productive partnership in attack. This has propelled Simone Inzaghi’s team to the top of Serie A, even if it’s by goal difference.
Lukaku’s journey at Roma has had a promising start, as he has scored four goals in five matches across various competitions since his debut in early September.
