A Special Court Martial established by the Nigerian Army has found Major General Umar Mohammed, the former Group Managing Director and Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Army Properties Limited, guilty on 14 out of 18 counts, including charges related to theft and various other offenses that contravene service laws.
The charges against General Mohammed encompassed allegations of theft, forgery, conspiracy, unauthorized diversion of Army property, among others. In one instance, he was found to have received $1.045,400 from shipping companies for the use of the Nigerian Army Jetty in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Additionally, he was found guilty of the misappropriation of $430,800 from the Nigerian Army Domiciliary account at Unity Bank in Abuja, intended for the use of the Nigerian Army Jetty in Marina, Lagos. The court martial also determined that he withdrew and confiscated N74 million out of N75 million designated for a property owned by the Nigerian Army in Ikoyi, Lagos.
However, General Mohammed was not found guilty of allegations that he sold Army property valued at N200 million in Lagos or that he stole N750 million out of N2.5 billion earmarked from banks and subscribers for an Army housing estate in Asokoro, Abuja. He was also not convicted of charges related to the forgery of a Deed of Agreement document in connection to the confiscation of another Army property in Lagos.
The Special Court Martial, led by Major General Kames Myam as President, included seven other Major Generals as members, with a Brigadier General serving as the Judge Advocate. The court is expected to announce the sentences for the accused by the following Tuesday.
During the court-martial proceedings, Major General UM Mohammed was brought into the court in a wheelchair, but the court’s President, Maj-Gen Myan, confirmed that all necessary medical assessments had verified his fitness to stand trial.
The prosecution was led by Colonel BA Oguntayo (Rtd), while the defense was represented by Olalekan Ojo, SAN.
