Health officials in Kenya are currently probing an unknown illness following the hospitalization of over 90 schoolgirls.
These girls are experiencing challenges with walking, as evident in viral videos where they appear to stagger. These students, hailing from Eregi Girls High School in the western region of the country, are also reporting symptoms of knee pain.
During a visit to the school on Tuesday, a senior official from the education ministry reassured concerned parents that the situation is being managed. He further conveyed that regular classes would proceed without disruption for the other students.
“The education department, the county government and public health department are giving a commitment that the children will be treated,” said Jared Obiero, the regional director of education.
Blood, urine and stool samples from the ill students were sent to laboratories in Kisumu, a neighbouring city, and the capital, Nairobi.
Conclusive results to determine the cause of the illness are expected later on Wednesday.
