Senate Promises Swift Action On New Minimum Wage Bill

Sen. Diket Plang, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Employment, Labour, and Productivity, has announced that the upper chamber will swiftly review the proposed new minimum wage bill.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, Plang emphasized that the passage of this bill would enhance workers’ well-being and foster industrial peace in the nation.

He also pledged the dedication of the 10th National Assembly to enhancing workers’ living standards and addressing the prevalent poverty issues in the country.

” Efforts of the Federal Government and the organised labour for agreeing to set in motion necessary machinery to review the current minimum wage as contained in the memorandum of understanding signed by the negotiating parties are commendable .

” The Senate Committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity under my chairmanship is prepared to give expeditious attention to the passage of a new Act once negotiation on the matter is concluded and such bill transmitted to the National Assembly for enactment,” he said.

The chairman praised the Federal Government for its proactive measures to prevent a nationwide workers’ strike on Tuesday. However, he cautioned all parties involved against going back on the agreements that have been made.
