Hamas issued a warning to Israel, urging them to cease the bombing of civilian residences in Gaza without prior notice, or else they threatened to execute Israeli hostages.
The spokesperson for the armed wing of Hamas, Abu Obaida, stated that their actions align with Islamic teachings in safeguarding these hostages.
Dr. Basem Naim, who heads Hamas’s political and international relations, asserted that the group had not targeted civilians since their militants crossed into Israel from Gaza and initiated a surprise attack. When questioned about the number of hostages taken, Naim couldn’t provide an exact figure but assured they would be treated with humanity and respect. He emphasized that instructions had been given to protect the elderly, women, and children.
However, another Hamas official later declared their intention to execute Israeli civilian captives if Israel continued bombing civilian residences in Gaza without warning. Reports also indicated that Qatar was mediating negotiations for the exchange of civilian hostages, including women and children.
