The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a strike notice to the Federal Government, scheduled for November 8, in response to the recent attacks, abduction, and assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero, among others.
During a briefing on Friday, leaders of NLC and TUC presented a six-point demand to the Federal Government, which includes the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State and the Area Commander, among other officials, for their alleged involvement in the mistreatment of Ajaero and other workers.
It’s worth noting that suspected state agents and security personnel had violently targeted Ajaero and other labor leaders, damaging their vehicles, causing injuries, and stealing their belongings, such as phones, money, and ATM cards, during a scheduled protest at the NLC State secretariat. The protest was organized to address issues like unpaid salaries, allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.
The attack on Ajaero and its consequences have sparked widespread condemnation across the country. Leaders of NLC and TUC are set to meet next Tuesday to determine their appropriate response to this incident.
