On Tuesday, Italian police reported that a Paris Saint-Germain supporter was attacked by individuals wearing hoods and was stabbed before PSG’s Champions League match against AC Milan. The unnamed French man suffered two stab wounds to his leg and was subsequently hospitalised.
Fortunately, his life was not in danger, as reported by Corriere della Sera, which identified him as a 34-year-old.
Witnesses revealed that the altercation occurred between approximately 50 Milan fans and French supporters in Milan’s Navigli area, a popular spot for cafes, bars, and nightlife.
Social media videos depict a group of men near a canal, where they set off flares and then abruptly fled from another group, some of whom were armed with what appeared to be batons.
This incident follows a similar one in which a Newcastle United supporter was stabbed in the same area of Milan before a Champions League match against Milan less than two months ago. Milan, a seven-time European champion, was set to host PSG on Tuesday.
PSG was leading Group F by two points, having defeated Milan 3-0 at the Parc des Princes just two weeks earlier. The atmosphere at the San Siro was already intense, and the return of Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who had joined PSG as a free agent in the summer of 2021, further added to the tension.
This match was crucial for both teams’ chances of advancing to the Champions League knockout stage, as only four points separated the four teams in the group. Milan, at the bottom of the group with two points, had failed to score a single goal in their first three matches.
