Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the presidential running mate of the Labour Party (LP), has urged President Bola Tinubu and his Vice, Kashim Shettima, to step down from their positions.
Baba-Ahmed expressed the view that Senate President Godswill Akpabio should oversee a new presidential election following the resignations of Tinubu and Shettima.
He articulated this position during an interview on Arise Television when asked about the potential of cooperating with Tinubu’s administration. Baba-Ahmed firmly asserted that Tinubu and Shettima were unlawfully inaugurated after the 2023 presidential election, and therefore, the LP would not engage with what he considered an illegitimate government.
In his words, “Can Tinubu and Shettima just resign and let the Senate President conduct another election? They were fraudulently sworn in, and we will not work with an illegitimate government. If it is not constitutional, we are not touching it.”
His comments come in the wake of a press conference held by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the LP, where he criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Supreme Court for their perceived mishandling of election-related issues.
