Less than 24 hours before Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State, reports indicate that violence erupted at the Twon-Brass jetty in the Brass Local Government Area.
Allegedly, supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party clashed over electoral materials intended for the area.
The Independent National Electoral Commission officials were reportedly trying to unload the materials when the violence occurred.
The nature of the materials, sensitive or non-sensitive, remains unconfirmed. Disagreements arose between the parties’ supporters regarding the storage of electoral items for tomorrow’s polls, with claims of injuries to the Brass LGA PDP chairman, Bara Daniel, during the scuffle.
Former council chairman Victor Isaiah, associated with the APC, denied direct involvement in the assault, asserting that he intervened to ease tensions and accused the PDP chairman of intimidating APC supporters in the dispute over securing electoral materials.
He said, “I was there actually to monitor the process of the materials offloading but the PDP chairman kept making derogatory statements which unsettled some people, but I was able to calm the situation.”
Nevertheless, military personnel stepped in and restored order.
Mr. Hanson Karika, the chairman of Brass Local Government Area, vehemently denounced the assault on the PDP chairman of Brass LGA. He urged security agents to stay vigilant and prevent any escalation of violence.
