Liverpool faced an unexpected 3-2 defeat against Toulouse in the Europa League Group E, while Brighton & Hove Albion made significant progress towards the knockout stage with a 2-0 victory over Ajax Amsterdam. Despite being denied a last-minute equalizer by VAR, Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool still leads the group with nine points, two ahead of Toulouse.
At the bottom of the group, LASK secured their first points with a 3-1 home win against Union Saint Gilloise, who maintained their third-place position. The match saw Liverpool starting strongly, with Joe Gomez’s header hitting the crossbar.
Toulouse took the lead after 36 minutes when Aron Donnum intercepted the ball in midfield and scored with a deflected shot. Thjis Dallinga extended the lead in the 58th minute. Liverpool managed to pull one back in the 73rd minute through an own goal by Cristian Casseres, but Frank Magri quickly restored Toulouse’s two-goal advantage.
Luis Diaz, who had a challenging day with his father’s kidnapping earlier, started for Liverpool but was replaced by Diogo Jota in the final minutes. Jota brought hope to the Premier League side with a well-placed shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Liverpool thought they had secured a draw when Jarell Quansah found the net in the seventh minute of stoppage time, but VAR disallowed it due to a handball by Alexis Mac Allister earlier in the play.
