On Saturday, individuals suspected to be armed robbers targeted party agents at All Saints Anglican Church, Egbu, Owerri North.
The assailants, initially posing as ordinary voters, later revealed weapons, causing chaos and panic with indiscriminate shooting on the church premises. The incident resulted in the theft of N1.5 million allocated for vote-buying in the governorship election, prompting everyone present, including police and journalists, to flee.
Eyewitness Mr. Ekeocha shared a harrowing account of the event.
Ekeocha said, “Everything happened in less than two minutes as everyone had run away.
“They simply walked away into their vehicles, and sped off.”
The event not only caused a disturbance in the electoral process but also emphasized the susceptibility of polling stations throughout the state. As law enforcement officers evacuated the area, concerns were raised regarding the overall security readiness for the elections.
