On Saturday, security personnel reportedly apprehended James Onoja, the council chairman of Igalamela Local Government Area in Kogi State, on charges of possessing ammunition and a significant amount of cash concealed in ‘Ghana-must-go’ bags. The seized items were allegedly intended for election-related purposes.
A viral video depicts the suspects, including the council chairman, expressing remorse and seeking forgiveness near an army checkpoint.
Despite attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, William Ovye, for comment, there was no response. The ongoing elections in Kogi State have faced allegations of vote-buying and experienced low voter turnout.
Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate Dino Melaye has urged the cancellation of elections in five LGAs.
