The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have decided to initiate the planned nationwide strike starting from midnight today. This action stems from the assault on the NLC President and colleagues in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, as well as unresolved labor issues in the state.
On November 7, they had already agreed to declare a nationwide strike by Tuesday, November 14, if their demands were not addressed.
The attack on Ajaero and other labour leaders during a scheduled protest on November 1 had led to vehicle damage, injuries, and theft of personal belongings, intensifying the call for action due to outstanding salary and allowance issues, non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act, and other grievances at the NLC State Secretariat in Owerri.
The brutality faced by Ajaero and his counterparts has sparked widespread condemnation both within the country and internationally.
