Reps To Intervene In Labour Nationwide Strike

The House of Representatives is getting involved in the ongoing labour unions’ strike, with Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announcing the National Assembly’s immediate intervention. This decision came after Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu raised an urgent motion for the National Assembly leadership to address the issue promptly.

During the debate, legislators were divided: some contested the reason behind the strike and urged the government to take legal action against the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for allegedly disregarding a court order against the strike. However, the labour unions claimed they were not served a court notice.

On the other hand, some lawmakers advocated for the House to maintain a neutral stance in handling the matter. The labour unions commenced a nationwide strike on Tuesday, citing an alleged attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State’s capital, on November 1, 2023. This incident occurred as he prepared to lead a protest against what they termed as anti-labor policies of the Governor Hope Uzodimma-led administration.
