Strike: Meeting With Organised Labour Fruitful- FG

The federal government’s meeting with the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) regarding the ongoing strike was deemed Fruitful, according to statements by Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong Bako.

The meeting, held at the office of the National Security Adviser, concluded with both sides agreeing that the labour leaders would relay the discussions to their respective groups and respond accordingly.

This suggests a potential resolution to the strike initiated by the unions last Tuesday. Minister Lalong, alongside Minister of State for Labour, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyeajeocha, engaged with the striking unions during the session, which followed the nationwide strike triggered by the assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State on November 1.

The labour unions are advocating for the apprehension and prosecution of the alleged political assailants who targeted the NLC President and other workers protesting unpaid salaries, an action that has significantly impacted economic activities across various parts of the country.

He said, “The meeting was in respect to what happened especially in Imo State and this meeting has heavy security considerations that is why we took the meeting at the office of the National Security Adviser.

“All the labour leaders were also here with us. We had a very fruitful discussion. They have also agreed to take it back home to their constituencies so that they can suspend the strike.

Additionally, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo mentioned that the Federal Government presented numerous appeals and commitments that could potentially result in the suspension of the ongoing strike.

He said, “We had a robust conversation where a lot of assurances were given in furtherance to the release that was made by the NSA this morning that some people have been apprehending.

“They made several appeals and promises to us so we said let’s go back and reappraise all the conversations we have had and we will communicate accordingly.”
