The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ruled the Zamfara State governorship election held on March 18 as inconclusive. In a unanimous decision by a three-member panel led by Justice Oyebisi Folayemi, they invalidated Governor Dauda Lawal’s return as the winner for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Justice Sybil Nwaka, delivering the lead judgment, instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election in three specific Local Government Areas (LGAs) – Maradun, Birnin-Magaji, and Bukkuyum. These areas either hadn’t held elections previously or had uncounted results from various polling units.
The court criticized INEC’s reliance on information from its INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal for the final result collation, deeming it improper. The appeal was filed by Bello Matawalle, the immediate past governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, who was later appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the Minister of State for Defence.
