Lionel Messi’s 2022 World Cup Jerseys To Go Up For Auction

Sotheby’s announced plans to auction a series of six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina’s victorious 2022 World Cup campaign in December, estimating their worth at $10 million. Messi sported these jerseys during specific halves of matches against teams like Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia, and notably, the final against France.

The triumph in Qatar marked the culmination of Messi’s pursuit, finally securing the World Cup title after falling short in four previous attempts, adding to his illustrious career.

Sotheby’s anticipates that if the jerseys exceed the $10 million estimate, this sale could set a new record for the most valuable sports memorabilia collection ever auctioned. They highlighted the previous record of $10.1 million, set by the auction of basketball legend Michael Jordan’s jersey from the 1998 NBA finals with the Chicago Bulls.

Notably, auction houses have increasingly recognized the burgeoning market for sports memorabilia in recent years.

These historic shirts are being presented for auction by AC Momento, a US tech startup assisting athletes in managing their memorabilia collections.

Some of the profits from the auction will go towards supporting the UNICAS Project, which collaborates with a children’s hospital in Barcelona, aiding youngsters battling rare illnesses.

During the auction period, spanning from November 30 to December 14, the jerseys will be on display for public viewing at no cost.
