Reactions As Sanwo-Olu Approved N3.75bn For Rechargeable Fans, Perfume

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, faced extensive criticism for authorizing expenditures such as N7.5 million for replacing liquid fragrance in his office and N3 billion for acquiring rechargeable fans for the deputy’s office.

Social media in Nigeria buzzed with reactions to other contracts approved by Lagos state’s Public Procurement Agency in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2023.

These contracts included over N440 million for a new Lexus LX 600 Bulletproof SUV for the Chief of Staff’s pool, N18.5 million for supplying and distributing 2,000 Noiler chickens across local government areas, N152 million for restoring water supply at the Iduganran palace, N581 million for renovating Saint Andrews Anglican Church, N30 million for the deputy governor’s monthly outreach to indigent citizens by his wife, and another N30 million for an empowerment program.

Funsho Doherty, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos, expressed concerns over these projects and wrote an open letter to Governor Sanwo-Olu urging a review of some of these expenditures.

“I just wrote an open letter to the governor on Public Procurement awards reported by LASG for the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2023, highlighting a number of issues for further scrutiny and remedial action.

“Judicious use of public funds is always important and is especially so now,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Internet users raised doubts about certain contracts outlined in the document, highlighting concerns that government officials exhibit wastefulness and a lack of sensitivity towards the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians.
