FG To Revitalize Ajaokuta Steel Company For Production Of Military Hardware

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, affirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to revitalize and reposition the Ajaokuta Steel Company.

This aims to enable the production of military hardware crucial for bolstering Nigeria’s security efforts.

Badaru highlighted the significance of partnering with the Ministry of Steel Development, emphasizing that Ajaokuta Steel Company’s historical expertise in local military hardware production aligns with the country’s need to reduce dependence on foreign sources.

Strengthening the company’s capabilities in manufacturing military equipment using steel is seen as a strategic move to enhance Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and other security threats.

“Local production of military hardware is critical because the crisis we have in the country at present will not allow us rely on other countries for military hardware,” he said.

During his statement, the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, emphasized that the revitalization of Ajaokuta Steel could significantly transform the Nigerian industry and the economy overall. He pointed out that the lack of funds had caused a halt in production.

“But I believe that if initiatives are put in place, Ajaokuta Steel will be revived and work will resume within the first four years of the Present Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He mentioned that among the 48 production units within the company, one was specifically designated for manufacturing military hardware. He highlighted that a collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and the company could significantly enhance the nation’s capacity to produce essential military equipment.

At the start of the meeting, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, outlined that the primary objective of the gathering was to assess the current status of the company and establish a systematic plan towards achieving the revival of Ajaokuta Steel within the upcoming four years.
