Super Falcons Thrash Cape Verde  5-0 In Women’s AFCON Qualifier

Nigeria commenced their campaign for a spot in next year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) impressively, securing a commanding 5-0 victory over Cape Verde at Abuja’s Moshood Abiola Stadium on Thursday.

Uchenna Kanu and Esther Okoronkwo each scored twice, while Monday Gift added a goal as the Super Falcons dominated against their opponents. Despite the absence of star striker Asisat Oshoala, the reigning WAFCON champions displayed superiority from the outset. Kanu opened the scoring just seven minutes into the game, and although Cape Verde attempted to equalize, a remarkable 16th-minute save by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie thwarted their efforts.

The Nigerian team extended their lead with Gift’s goal before Kanu struck again, converting a Toni Payne cross at the 45th-minute mark. The dominance continued in the second half, with Okoronkwo, a substitute for Gift, netting two goals off assists from Esther Akudo Ogbonna, securing the fifth goal and showcasing the Falcons’ superiority.

Following a job well done, interim coach Madugu Justine made substitutions, bringing in Tochukwu Oluehi for Nnadozie in goal, and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu made her debut by replacing Esther Akudo.

The return leg is scheduled for Tuesday in Praia, the Cape Verdean capital, determining the team advancing to the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco. This match marked Madugu’s third game in charge of the Super Falcons in the absence of Head Coach Randy Waldrum.
