The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria declared that Catholic Churches in the nation won’t perform blessings for same-sex unions, citing that such acts contravene God’s law, the church’s teachings, and the country’s legislation.
This stance was articulated in a statement released by the conference’s President, Lucius Ugirji, and Secretary, Donayus Ogun, on Wednesday.
They said, “The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria assures the entire People of God that the teaching of the Catholic Church on marriage remains the same. There is, therefore, no possibility in the teaching of the Church of blessing same-sex unions and activities.
“That would go against God’s law, the teachings of the Church, the laws of our nation, and the cultural sensibilities of our people.”
Contrary to reports, the bishops clarified that the authorization by Pope Francis to bless same-sex marriages was misunderstood. Pope Francis did indeed allow priests to bless same-sex and “irregular” couples in specific situations.
