Just under 24 hours after receiving the nomination notice, the Senate swiftly approved the appointment of 11 Supreme Court justices, all handpicked by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fill vacancies within the highest court.
The Senate endorsed these appointments after reviewing and accepting a report from the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters during its Thursday session.
Following the recommendations made by the National Judicial Council to fill vacant positions due to justices’ deaths and resignations, Tinubu urged the Senate to confirm these nominees.
Among the confirmed justices are Justice Haruna Tsammani (Northeast), known for chairing the Presidential Election Petition Court; Justice Moore Adumein (South-South); Justice Jummai Sankey (North-central); Justice Chidiebere Uwa (South-east); and Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme (South-east).
The remaining appointees include Justice Obande Ogbuinya (South-East); Justice Stephen Adah (North-Central); Justice Habeeb Abiru (South-West); Justice Jamilu Tukur (Northwest); Justice Abubakar Umar (Northwest); and Justice Mohammed Idris (North-Central).
Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno), the committee chairman, highlighted in his report that these nominees possessed the necessary qualifications and experience for the positions, with no objections raised against them. Thus, he recommended their confirmation.
Following the confirmation of these 11 justices, the Supreme Court now boasts a full bench, meeting the mandated requirement of 21 justices.
