Arsenal Rejects Super League, Prioritises Fans- Arteta

Mikel Arteta emphasised the importance of prioritising fans as Arsenal, leading the confirmed their exclusion from a revised European Super League proposal. The club, previously part of the initial 12 signatories including six from the Premier League, witnessed the collapse of the project in 2021.

Following a ruling by the European Court of Justice against UEFA for abusing its power in European football, the organizers of the Super League intended to introduce a new 64-team tournament to challenge or potentially replace UEFA’s Champions League.

On Friday, Arsenal reaffirmed their stance, stating that their position concerning the European Super League remains unchanged. They joined other Premier League clubs in distancing themselves from any potential involvement in a revived Super League.

“We will continue to play in UEFA competitions and continue to work with fellow European clubs and the European Club Association (ECA),” it said.

Shortly after his pre-match press conference, Arteta, whose team is set to confront Liverpool in a high-stakes Premier League encounter on Saturday, restated the club’s stance.

“Football supporters and the passion they bring to the game is the main reason why this game belongs to them and to the players because they are the absolute protagonists and what makes this game so enjoyable,” he said.

“And we have to look after them and their opinion is very, very important.”

The Super League project now only maintains public connections with two clubs, the Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona. Arteta expressed uncertainty regarding its potential future.

“Everybody would have their own opinion, and commitment now, in a year’s time, in three years’ time. Who knows how it’s going to end up?”

The Spaniard, who has been in charge of Arsenal for four years, said the Premier League was a “beautiful” competition.

“We are so privileged to have the league that we have, to have the competition that we have, to have the uncertainty that we have every single game,” he said.

“That’s what drives this league and a lot of football supporters to watch it every time because it’s beautiful.”
