France Bans Nigerian Students, Others From Bringing Families

The French parliament approved a law restricting Nigerian students and others from bringing their families to the country. This legislation, supported by President Macron’s party and the far-right National Rally led by Marine Le Pen, underwent revisions after an initial rejection.

The updated immigration policy toughens family reunification processes, delays welfare access for migrants, and prohibits detaining minors in detention centers. However, it faced opposition from some regional leaders and criticism for discriminating between citizens and migrants regarding benefit eligibility.

Right-wing parties embraced the stricter version of the bill, with Le Pen lauding it as an “ideological victory.” Meanwhile, left-wing voices accused Macron of empowering the far-right and criticized those supporting the bill for abandoning their principles.

Furthermore, 32 French departments, including Paris, declared their refusal to implement certain aspects of the law concerning non-citizens’ benefits. This development in French legislation occurred just before the EU’s adoption of an asylum system reform, aiming to establish border detention centers and facilitate faster deportations of rejected asylum seekers.

The agreement also includes provisions for relocating asylum seekers from high-arrival southern member states to other countries, which was hailed as a significant step by Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
