Yesterday, the Oyo State Police Command dismissed two Special Constabularies, Kareem Fatai and Jimoh Lukman, for reportedly extorting money from a Dutch tourist.
The State Commissioner of Police, Adebola Hamzat, stated that the constabularies were caught on a viral video soliciting money from Ms. Noraly Schoenmaker, a tourist from The Netherlands, along the Moniya-Iseyin road.
He further highlighted that these dismissed constabularies knowingly disregarded several instructions and guidelines regarding professional misconduct, extortion, disrespectful behavior towards the public, and corrupt practices.
He said: “We have always been warning you against extortion. We have been warning you that this administration has zero tolerance for corruption.
“That is the stand of the Inspector General of Police and my stand as the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State.
“You are very aware that we don’t condone corruption and don’t want the command to be given a bad name.”
Hamzat mentioned that the constabularies’ act of extortion was broadcasted globally through live streaming, causing international embarrassment to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). The Commissioner of Police cautioned fellow officers to be content with their salaries and refrain from damaging the force’s reputation by engaging in extortion from motorists.
He said: “I wish to inform the residents of Oyo State and by extension the public that Special Constabularies Kareem Fatai and Jimoh Lukmon have been dismissed in furtherance of the completion of their orderly room trials.
“This action is to serve as deterrent to other officers with a similar disposition.”
