Reps Probe Navy, Tantita Security Clashes

The House of Representatives has initiated an immediate inquiry into the persistent clashes between the Nigeria Navy and private security entities hired by NNPC Limited to safeguard oil installations in the Niger Delta.

In response to a motion presented by Hon. Donald Ojogo, the House emphasized the urgency of resolving these conflicts to maintain the nation’s oil production target for the 2024 budget.

The investigation committee, led by Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, comprising various House Committees on Oil Theft, aims to address these conflicts. Hon. Ojogo highlighted that failure to resolve these issues could severely hinder the country’s ability to meet the oil production goals outlined in the 2024 budget.

Recognizing the statutory role of the Nigerian Navy in safeguarding maritime integrity and national assets, Hon. Ojogo stressed the importance of the Navy’s responsibility in protecting the country’s oil and gas infrastructure across various water zones. He acknowledged the positive impact of engaging private security firms to protect these assets but expressed concern over conflicts hampering their collaborative efforts.

Additionally, Hon. Ojogo highlighted the positive outcomes of these security arrangements in curbing oil theft and boosting productivity. However, he emphasized that ongoing conflicts between the Navy and private security firms threaten these gains and could hinder the anticipated increase in oil production outlined in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2024 budget estimates.
