The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) organized a solidarity march supporting Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, held in front of the Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital, last Friday.
This rally was a collaborative effort between the unions, students, youths, civil society organizations, other labor unions, and members of the Hausa community in the state. It occurred a few days following President Bola Tinubu’s involvement in the state’s political crisis.
Rivers State has been embroiled in a power struggle between former Governor Nyseom Wike and Fubara, leading to a division among lawmakers in the House, with 27 defecting from the PDP to the ruling APC, where Wike currently holds a ministerial position.
This unrest resulted in an impeachment notice served to the governor, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and several pro-Wike commissioners resigning from Fubara’s cabinet. However, a potential resolution emerged after President Tinubu mediated a meeting between the conflicting parties on Monday.
