Making public promises is a recipe for disaster. Breaking them can be embarrassing, and keeping them may feel like bondage. These were my thoughts on a Sunday morning while attending church for the celebration of the Eucharist. The idea struck me as the officiating clergy of the day received a beautiful baby girl who danced to the altar in thanksgiving for her birthday.
The congregation was in a joyful mood, celebrating with her. Amidst this joy, the officiating clergy, after receiving her at the altar, asked her to make a request and promised to fulfill it. To everyone’s surprise, the five-year-old shocked all by requesting a car as a birthday gift – not a toy car, but a real one. She asked twice, reiterating the same desire. How interesting!
This reminded me of the biblical story of John the Baptist’s head on a platter, emphasizing the inherent dangers of public promises.
