Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, distributed N25 million among 250 elderly individuals hailing from the 25 Local Government Areas within Delta State. The disbursement occurred during a ceremony organized by the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Elderly Support Scheme at the Government House in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
Representing Tinubu at the event, Mrs. Tobore Oborevwori, the Wife of the Delta State governor, not only facilitated the cash presentation but also provided clothing materials and arranged free medical checkups for the elderly attendees in a show of support.
During her speech, Tinubu expressed delight at the inaugural phase of the Elderly Support Scheme under the Renewed Hope Initiative, themed “Better Days Ahead.” She underscored that this economic empowerment initiative signifies a commitment to the welfare of elderly citizens, marking a significant stride towards building a more inclusive and compassionate society collectively.
She said, “The scheme aims to support 250 vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 and above in all 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory, and veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association.
“The selected beneficiaries are to receive a sum of N100,000 each to alleviate economic burdens during the festive period.
“The total sum to be disbursed is Nine Hundred and Fifty Million Naira (N950,000,000), as approved by the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative.
“Each state of the federation will receive N25m without discrimination.”
Tinubu underscored the significance of giving priority to elderly citizens, acknowledging their contributions and recognizing the unique hurdles they encounter, especially during the festive season.
She expressed gratitude to all those who contributed by offering free medical screenings and distributing various items to the beneficiaries during the event.
In extending a warm welcome to the senior citizens, Oborevwori, speaking through Lawrentta Ogbedo, the Director General of the You Matter Charity Foundation, conveyed immense pleasure at the disbursement of the cash sums. She commended the timely and commendable nature of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s gesture.
While acknowledging the country’s challenging economic situation, she highlighted the scheme’s impact on families, particularly the elderly, who are currently facing financial hardships.
The governor’s wife praised Tinubu’s endeavors to alleviate the economic burdens faced by senior citizens during the festive season, noting that the gesture is highly valued by the state’s populace.
