US Implements Ban On Apple Watch Models

The implementation of a ban on certain Apple smartwatch models in the United States began on Tuesday as President Joe Biden’s administration chose not to oppose a decision regarding patent violations.

Back in October, the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) had enforced a ban on Apple Watch models due to a patented technology related to blood oxygen level detection.

Although Apple had contested this ruling, citing errors in the ITC’s findings and requesting a reversal, the company halted the sales of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the US last week.

The directive to restrict certain Apple Watch models resulted from a complaint filed with the commission in mid-2021, accusing Apple of infringing on the “light-based oximetry functionality” of medical device maker Masimo Corp.

“After careful consultations, Ambassador (Katherine) Tai decided not to reverse the determination, and the ITC’s decision became final on December 26, 2023,” the President’s executive office said in a statement on Tuesday.

With each iteration of its Apple Watch, Apple has consistently enhanced fitness and health capabilities, solidifying its dominance in the smartwatch market.

September saw the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 9 by Apple, highlighting improved performance and expanded functionalities, including the ability to access and record health-related information.
