Chinese Smartphone Giant, Xiaomi, Unveils First Electric Car

Xiaomi, a prominent Chinese electronics company known for smartphones and various gadgets, introduced its inaugural electric car model amid aspirations to establish a global presence in the automotive industry, despite fierce competition domestically.

Beyond being the world’s fourth-largest smartphone producer, Beijing-based Xiaomi also dominates the market in tablets, smartwatches, headphones, and electric scooters. In 2021, the company revealed its plans to venture into electric vehicles, aligning with the trend among several major Chinese tech companies entering the highly competitive sector.

At a Beijing event on Thursday, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun unveiled the SU7, a sedan slated for a 2025 market debut. Integrated with Xiaomi software to harmonize with the company’s array of devices, the car will be manufactured by local producer BAIC.

Lei Jun expressed the ambitious goal of positioning Xiaomi among the top five automotive manufacturers globally within 15 to 20 years. The SU7’s batteries will be sourced from China’s leading electric automaker BYD and domestic battery giant CATL.

Notably, China’s EV sector has seen substantial investment from major tech players, capitalizing on the country’s status as the world’s largest automotive market. BYD notably dominated China’s EV market in November, surpassing Tesla in sales figures.

Established in 2010, Xiaomi rapidly expanded by offering high-end devices at accessible prices, primarily distributed through online channels. However, the company faced challenges, including being blacklisted by the United States in 2021 due to alleged connections with the Chinese military.

While the history of electric cars traces back to 1893, recent milestones include Nissan’s launch of the LEAF in December 2010—an all-electric, zero-emission vehicle. Subsequently, in January 2013, Nissan initiated LEAF production in Tennessee for the North American market, supported by a loan from the Energy Department, as reported by energy.gov, a leading US government agency.
