A tragic incident unfolded in Imo State as Cosmas Ugwu, a policeman from the Imo State Police Command, was fatally shot by his 23-year-old girlfriend, identified as Amanda Uchechi Ugo, hailing from Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area.
The unfortunate event took place on Boxing Day around 6:30 pm at the Ezinihitte Area Command, where officers on duty heard three gunshots emanating from the room where Officer Ugwu was staying.
“When police officers ran into the room to see what was going on, they found Corporal Ugwu lying in a pool of his blood.
The girl shot him three times in his chest and his left hand. He was rushed immediately to Evergreen Hospital in Ezinihitte, where he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty,” a source said.
Waffi TV learnt that the deceased had a heated altercation with his girlfriend, during which the girl grabbed his rifle and fired three shots, resulting in his tragic demise.
“Nobody actually knows what went wrong between the two, but how the girl was able to use a police rifle successfully is still a surprise to many. Maybe, Ugwu was the one who taught her.” the source added.
The slain officer’s body has been placed in the Obizi mortuary as investigations continue, while the suspect remains in police custody for questioning and potential prosecution.
