Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min secured his spot in South Korea’s Asian Cup squad, marking Jurgen Klinsmann’s endeavour to put an end to the nation’s 64-year wait for a continental title.
Joining the squad is Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan, who notched his 10th Premier League goal against Brentford on Wednesday. Klinsmann selected a 26-man roster for the upcoming tournament in Qatar starting on January 12.
As the captain, Son will lead a squad featuring Bayern Munich’s defender Kim Min-jae and Paris Saint-Germain’s 22-year-old attacking midfielder Lee Kang-in.
South Korea last clinched the Asian Cup in 1960, and Klinsmann is determined that only claiming the title will suffice this time.
Drawn in Group E, South Korea is set to encounter Malaysia, Jordan, and Bahrain in the initial stage after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat against eventual champions Qatar in the 2019 quarter-finals held in the United Arab Emirates.
