FG Plans Low-Cost Shelters For IDPs, Others Nationwide

Mrs. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has revealed the Federal Government’s initiative to construct affordable housing for the impoverished, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and refugees nationwide.

Edu emphasized that this initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to furnishing dignified residences for the underprivileged, IDPs, and refugees, aiming to combat multifaceted poverty.

This information was conveyed through a statement endorsed by Rhoda Iliya, the Deputy Director of Information in the Ministry, on Tuesday, subsequent to the minister’s examination of prototype shelters for two different house models (one-bedroom and two-bedroom) in Idu village, Abuja.

Edu expressed the government’s urgency to swiftly execute this project to cater to the needs of IDPs in various regions of Nigeria, providing them with suitable homes. She acknowledged the dire situation caused by the destruction of an IDP camp in Borno State and the displacement in Benue State due to conflicts between farmers and herders, leaving millions without adequate shelter.

Additionally, the minister conveyed that the President had instructed the local community to construct these shelters, aiming to equip them with skills, economic opportunities, and the pride of homeownership through their hands-on involvement in building their own houses. This process would be closely supervised by professionals to ensure adherence to standards.

“To ensure quality control, the construction of the houses will be supervised by professional architects, engineers and support from the Federal Ministry of Works”, she added.

The statement also read that the shelters “will be built in Benue, Borno, Zamfara, Yobe, Cross River, Ebonyi, Lagos, Adamawa, Bayelsa and other states that have large numbers of IDPs, Refugees and extremely poor Nigerians”
