NDDC Distributes Relief Items To Flood Victims In Bayelsa

The Niger Delta Development Commission has provided relief aid to flood-prone communities in all eight local government areas of Bayelsa State. This initiative, aimed at alleviating the impact of flooding on the state’s residents, was detailed in a statement released by Pius Ughakpoteni, the NDDC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, in Port Harcourt.

Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of the NDDC, emphasized during the distribution event in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, that these distributed relief materials were part of the agency’s response to the challenges faced by communities dealing with recurring floods.

He noted that this assistance was intended to mitigate the effects of persistent flooding, with the relief items handed over to community representatives to address their immediate needs. Representing Dr. Ogbuku were Dr. Week Doodei, the NDDC’s Director of Procurement, and Godknows Alamieyeseigha, the Director of the Commission’s Bayelsa State Office.

He reaffirmed the NDDC’s commitment to ameliorating the challenges facing the people of the Niger Delta region, saying, “We share in the pains of the victims of the flooding in Bayelsa State. We realise that they have lost a lot which cannot be replaced.

“We assure you that the NDDC has very good programmes for the people of the Niger Delta region and as many people as possible will benefit from the distribution of the palliatives.”

He encouraged community representatives in flood-affected regions to thoughtfully allocate the provisions, consisting of food, household necessities, agricultural supplies, and livelihood resources like canoes, fishing gear, and other essentials, to support flood victims in rebuilding their lives.

The head of the NDDC urged community leaders benefiting from these resources to guarantee their delivery to the most vulnerable individuals in their respective areas. He cautioned against hoarding or diverting the aid, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards such actions.

Upon examining the relief supplies loaded onto numerous trucks, the delegates representing the NDDC chief instructed community leaders to ensure the distribution of the various items across different local government areas and communities.
