Douglas Luiz’s late penalty propelled Aston Villa to joint top of the Premier League with a 3-2 victory against 10-man Burnley, while Manchester City closed the gap on the leaders with a 2-0 win over Sheffield United.
Villa seemed destined for a dismal festive period after losing points to Sheffield United and surrendering a 2-0 lead against Manchester United on Boxing Day. However, Luiz’s penalty, which grazed in off the underside of the bar, brought Unai Emery’s team level with Liverpool at the top of the table, shattering Burnley’s hopes.
Despite Leon Bailey’s initial goal being swiftly countered by Zeki Amdouni and Villa’s subsequent lead through Moussa Diaby before halftime, their vulnerable defensive line allowed Lyle Foster to equalize 19 minutes from time. Nonetheless, Luiz’s second goal from the spot secured the dramatic win for Villa.
Meanwhile, despite Erling Haaland’s absence due to injury, City comfortably defeated Sheffield United, with Rodri and Julian Alvarez securing the win. City now sit tied with Arsenal at 40 points, just two points behind Villa and Liverpool, who await their match against Newcastle.
